What to visit?

Giverny and the Monet House are 20 minutes away from Saint-Pierre-La-Garenne. Famous all over the world, the Monet house should not be missed. Château-Gaillard, the royal Richard stronghold stands high over the Seine river.  It is a reminder of Normandy's historical independence. Visitors will appreciate its architecture, its lookout over the valley and the curves of the river Seine.

You can also visit the nearby towns of Gaillon and Vernon where half-timbered houses from the Renaissance period mix with modern shops.  Whilst in Vernon, you can also visit the Bizy castle.

What was a small French village like in the 18th century? In Lyons-la-Forêt (40km), you can experience one which has retained its original feel.  In Fleury-la-Forêt, visit the castle and especially its puppet collection.  Make a closed loop by Ry, the village where “Madame Bovary” lived in the 19th century.  Visit the village and its lovely church, with its typical wooden hall. If you feel inspired, take a stroll along the Andelle river, or maybe the Crevon, or Herondelles rivers. End your day with a trip to the Vascueil castle and the Ecouis abbey-church.

In the heart of Normandy, you will find the village of Camembert in Pays d’Auge (100 km)- it is a historic half-timbered bocage  with its patchword of farmland marked by  traditional hedges.  Today this is the image of the ideal French countryside, with fat cows, apple-trees, small villages and cooking with cream and calvados.

Many other visits can be organised and the owners will happily advise you on all the local and Parisian sites of interest.  Paris is less than one hour away by train or by car.

Nearer by the house, the Norman hills make pleasant walking. Several routes are sign-posted. They vary in length, and are accessible to everyone of average fitness.  You can also enjoy a stroll along the Seine River where there is a bird reserve.

Close to Saint-Pierre-la-Garenne, you can find two horseriding clubs (Le Goulet and Saint-Aubin-sur-Gaillon), two golf clubs (Gaillon, 5km et Evreux, 25 km), a sailing club (Les Andelys, 18 km), billiard rooms in Les Andelys and Vernon, and several bridge clubs (Vernon, les Andelys, Louviers et Evreux) where the owner, a bridge player, can guide you.
